How to confirm your child’s student status for your group insurance

Learn how to confirm your child’s student status online. You need to do this once they turn 18 or 21 (as specified in your insurance booklet) before the start of each semester.

Instructions

Secure site

  1. Log in to the secure site. On the home page, select Your account, then the Dependents and coordination of benefits link.

    Note

As soon as your child stops being a full-time student or turns 26, they are no longer eligible for coverage under your plan. When this happens, you need to remove them from your list of dependents to cancel their benefits.

  2. On the Account overview page, under the Dependents and coordination of benefits link, select the Edit button.

    Note

Don’t have this option? This means your plan doesn’t allow you to update dependent information online. Contact your plan administrator to make any changes.

  3. On the Modify my dependents file page, in the Dependents table, select the dependent whose student status you want to confirm.

  4. If you’re confirming your child’s student status for the first time, select the Full-time student checkbox, then enter their school enrollment information. When you’re done, select the Continue button.

    Note

If you’re confirming your child’s student status for the summer semester, the end date can’t be later than August 31.

  5. If you want to update your child’s student status, in the School attendance section, select the option Continuation of studies or Return to school. Then select the Continue button.

    Note

If your child hasn’t reached the minimum age or is over the maximum age (as specified in your insurance booklet), you won’t be able to continue to the next step.

  6. Check the information in the Dependents table. Then select the Submit button.

  7. You’ll see a summary of your dependent information. Select the checkbox to confirm it, then select the Submit button to complete the process.
